Marine biofouling resistance rating using image analysis

چکیده

Biofouling on ship hulls can cause increased fuel consumption and the global spread of nonindigenous species. The shipping industry utilizes fouling control coatings (FCC) to prevent biofouling from occurring hull. evaluation standards for performance FCC are based manual inspections, which unavoidably induce some degree subjectivity. A standardized recognition model using image analysis would provide a more objective basis FCC. For this purpose, several coated panels were immersed in ocean at CoaST Maritime Test Centre an exposure period six weeks, whereafter, fully covered with biofouling. program ilastik was then successfully used train pixel classification model, could simple segmentation different categories detected surface. From segmentation, coverage percentage determined. percentages stand alone information or be combination guidelines European Chemicals Agency calculate resistance rating (FRR). FRR obtained compared values panels.

Marine biofouling: a sticky problem.

Organisms that colonise underwater surfaces, such as barnacle larvae and spores of algae, use a diverse array of biological 'glues' to provide both temporary and more permanent adhesion. The practical consequence of colonisation by these organisms is biofouling - something that has plagued mariners for years - causing increased drag and, in extreme cases, corrosion. Might there be a biological ...

Biofouling protection for marine environmental sensors

These days, many marine autonomous environment monitoring networks are set up in the world. These systems take advantage of existing superstructures such as offshore platforms, lightships, piers, breakwaters or are placed on specially designed buoys or underwater oceanographic structures. These systems commonly use various sensors to measure parameters such as dissolved oxygen, turbidity, condu...

Contact angle hysteresis, adhesion, and marine biofouling.

Adhesive and marine biofouling release properties of coatings containing surface-oriented perfluoroalkyl groups were investigated. These coatings were prepared by cross-linking a copolymer of 1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodecyl acrylate and acrylic acid with a copolymer of poly(2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline) and methyl methacrylate at different molar ratios. The relationships between contact angle, co...

Inhibition of biofouling by marine microorganisms and their metabolites.

Development of microbial biofilms and the recruitment of propagules on the surfaces of man-made structures in the marine environment cause serious problems for the navies and for marine industries around the world. Current antifouling technology is based on the application of toxic substances that can be harmful to the natural environment. For this reason and the global ban of tributyl tin (TBT...

Using nanovibrations to monitor biofouling.

The article proposes the use of the mechatronic surface sensor (MSS) to detect surface contamination. This methodology is based on the analysis of the vibration response of the monitored surface.
